The most notable development today is the impact of dry winds originating from Central India, which have begun moving towards North Tamil Nadu. As a result, the intensity of rainfall in North Tamil Nadu, including areas like Chennai, is gradually decreasing and may stop completely.
Conversely, the influence of easterly winds is maintaining rainfall activity in Delta and South Tamil Nadu, and these rains are expected to continue in the coming days.
Rainfall Recap: The Last 24 Hours
Over the past 24 hours, the focus has been on moderate rainfall across parts of the Delta, Central, West, and South Tamil Nadu. Importantly, no major heavy rainfall events have been reported.
The highest reported rainfall figures include:
- Uthamacholamangalam (Cuddalore): 57.3 mm.
- Kalakudi (Pudukkottai) and Periyavalavadi (Tiruppur): 48 mm.
- Thennaipatti (Tiruchirappalli): 47 mm.
- Thirumayiladi (Mayiladuthurai) and Perumagalur Vadapatti (Thanjavur): 36 mm.
Rain was also recorded in districts such as Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Coimbatore, Ramanathapuram, Nagapattinam, Tenkasi, and Virudhunagar.
24-Hour Forecast: Where Will the Rain Fall?
The dry wind is expected to be fully established in North Tamil Nadu starting tonight. Consequently, most areas will experience a reduction in rain impact, with the possibility of rain primarily concentrated in the Delta and South Tamil Nadu regions.
Tamil Nadu Outlook:
- Low Chances: Areas like Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu have very limited chances, with only light rain possible in a few lucky spots.
- Moderate Coastal Rain: Moderate rainfall is likely for coastal areas including Mayiladuthurai, Karaikal, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, and the coastal parts of Thanjavur and Pudukkottai.
- Moderate Rain Pockets: Moderate rainfall is also anticipated in specific areas such as Kodaikanal and Pollachi, as well as the western parts of Tenkasi (especially the Kutralam area), Manjolai, and the regions bordering the Western Ghats in Kanyakumari.
- General Light to Moderate Rain: Districts across the southern belt, including Dindigul, Sivaganga, Madurai, Theni, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari, are forecast to receive light to moderate rain in many areas.
Kerala Outlook:
For our neighbors in Kerala, rain possibilities in the next 24 hours will be concentrated mostly in the districts of Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Kollam, and the western parts of Thiruvananthapuram, where moderate rain is possible. Other districts may only see light rain in select areas.

Despite the current dry spell affecting the North, the overall climate outlook suggests that rainfall may persist for Delta and South Tamil Nadu.
We anticipate an intermediate spell of rain around December 8, 9, and 10, impacting Delta, Central, North, West, and South Tamil Nadu. Following a break, a more structured rain spell, referred to as a 'thazhi amaippu' (or 'Trough' structure), is expected to bring rainfall again between December 15 and 19.
