We are currently observing a complex and differentiated weather system. A lingering upper-air circulation located near Camorin- Srilanka Coast is anticipated to strengthen into a low-pressure area. Concurrently, another low-pressure area near the Malacca coast (Indonesia) is also gaining strength.
Why the Confusion?
Currently, weather models are showing some confusion and variability. This complication stems from the interaction between two wave systems: the Equatorial Rossby Wave (which usually moves westward) and the Kelvin Wave (which can move eastward depending on gravitational forces and earth systems).
Because of these dynamics, the low-pressure system situated within the Indonesian sea areas is showing a delay in moving towards the Bay of Bengal. However, the circulation near Sri Lanka is showing signs that it may potentially form a low-pressure area adjacent to Sri Lanka.
The Senyar Cyclone Question
It remains confirmed that the Senyar cyclone is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal. However, the next 24 to 36 hours are crucial because there is uncertainty regarding which circulation system will become dominant.
- Some Artificial Intelligence (AI) based models previously suggested the system would track from Sri Lanka, moving through the Delta regions, and along the coastal districts.
- Other models placed the formation of Senyar near the Andaman regions in the Bay of Bengal.
The current assessment suggests that the circulation adjacent to Sri Lanka might potentially strengthen. We must wait another 24 to 36 hours for a clearer picture to emerge.This Scenario usually happens when there is a circulation in either side with the kind of waves support.
Rainfall Recap: Southern Districts Slammed
The persistent circulation near Sri Lanka and the Comorin Sea resulted in widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall across many parts of South Tamil Nadu yesterday.
Over the past 24 hours, heavy rain was recorded primarily in the districts of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi.
