Weather Update: Depression Near Sri Lanka – Heavy Rain Alert for Tamil Nadu and South Andhra
Good Morning! weather systems are actively developing in the Bay of Bengal, demanding careful attention. After observing the path of the previously anticipated "Chenniyar" cyclone, which ultimately recurved towards Indonesia and Malaysia, a new, more immediate system has intensified near Sri Lanka.
Current Status: A Deep Depression Forms
The weather disturbance, initially a trough near Sri Lanka, has consolidated. As of yesterday midnight (Jan 26), it formed into a Depression. Satellite imagery confirms this structure, showing dense rain clouds surrounding the system, stretching towards areas like Mannar and Thirukonamalai.
This system is currently centered in the southeastern parts of Sri Lanka. It has transitioned from a Well-Marked Low (WML) structure to a Deep Depression (1003 MB). The strength of this intensification is due to a powerful dual inflow. It is drawing moisture from the Westerly burst coming from Equatorial waters, as well as pulling in moisture from the South China Sea. This dual inflow and dual outflow mechanism are functioning efficiently, suggesting high potential for further strengthening.
Will it become Cyclone 'Ditwah'?
Meteorological models are currently unified in forecasting that the system will cross the Mannar regions, affect the Delta areas, and then move toward North Tamil Nadu.
However, the major question remains whether this system will intensify into a cyclone named 'Ditwah'. Because the system's path is closely related to the landmass of Sri Lanka, there is still doubt among weather models regarding its ability to increase intensity significantly. Consequently, there is only about a 20% to 40% chance that it will become a Ditwah cyclone. We anticipate that it will most likely approach North Tamil Nadu as an Deep Depression or, at worst, an Deep Depression/Well-Marked Low.
Severe Weather Impacts on Sri Lanka
Over the next 24 to 72 hours, Sri Lanka is under a severe weather threat. Heavy rainfall is widely expected across the country.
- Very heavy rain is likely in the Central, Northern, North-Western, and South-Western regions of Sri Lanka.
- Districts like Batticaloa, Mannar, Ampara, Badulla, and Hambantota are expected to receive heavy rain.
- Residents are urged to be cautious due to the high possibility of flash floods and landslides.
Tamil Nadu Rainfall Forecast
Rain activity is commencing today (January 27) and will intensify over the next few days, spreading north.
Today (November 27):
- Rain will start in the Delta and South Coastal districts.
- Heavy rain is expected in Ramanathapuram, Rameswaram, and Nagapattinam (Vedaranyam, Kodiakarai).
- Moderate to heavy rain is likely in the coastal areas of Thiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Cuddalore, and certain eastern parts of Sivaganga, as well as Tuticorin and Nellai.
- Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea due to sustained winds of 25 to 35 km/h in these areas.
- Most other districts, including Chennai, will experience dry weather today.
Tomorrow (November 28):
- The intensity increases, with very heavy rain expected in Ramanathapuram and the Delta districts.
- Coastal Delta districts will see the rain move inland to districts like Mayiladuthurai, Trichy, Perambalur, and Ariyalur, where moderate to heavy rain will begin.
- Rain is expected to start in Puducherry, Chengalpattu, and Villupuram starting late tomorrow night.
November 29 and 30: System Nears North TN
- Rain activity in Chennai is expected to begin in the early morning of January 29.
- As the system arrives over the Delta or between the Delta and Puducherry on the 29th, rainfall is expected to decrease in the Southern districts.
- The focus of the heavy rainfall will shift to the North and Coastal districts, stretching from Chennai down to Ramanathapuram.
- Most Northern districts, including Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, and Villupuram, will begin seeing rain from the 29th.
- Inland districts like Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, and Salem are also expected to receive rain.
- If the system crosses inland through Puducherry/Villupuram, the Western districts may receive better rain, though that chance is currently low.
South Andhra Pradesh Alert
Rainfall is expected to commence in the Southern Andhra regions on the afternoon of January 29. Due to convergence on the northern/northwestern side of the circulation, heavy to very heavy rain is likely in parts of South Andhra and Rayalaseema on November 29 and 30 till December 4th.

* மக்கள் **ஃபிளாஷ் ஃப்ளட்ஸ் (வெள்ள பாதிப்புகள்) மற்றும் நிலச்சரிவு (லேண்ட்ஸ்லைட்ஸ்)** ஆகியவற்றால் பாதிக்கப்படக்கூடிய வாய்ப்புகள் இருப்பதால், சற்று எச்சரிக்கையுடன் இருக்க வேண்டிய காலகட்டம் இது.

* **மீனவர்கள் கடலுக்குச் செல்ல வேண்டாம்**, ஏனெனில் இந்த பகுதிகளில் தரைக்காற்றின் வேகம் இருப்பதற்கு வாய்ப்பு.
* **சென்னை உட்பட மற்ற ஏனைய மாவட்டங்களில் வரண்ட வானிலையே** நேற்று போலவே நீடிப்பதற்கான சாத்தியக்கூறுகள் இருக்கக்கூடும்.
#### நாளை (நவம்பர் 28)
* ராமநாதபுரம் மாவட்டத்திலும், டெல்டா மாவட்டங்களிலுமே **மிக கனமழைக்க வாய்ப்பு** இருக்கும்.
* நாளை இரவு முதல் கடலோர டெல்டா மாவட்டங்களில் மழை தொடங்கி, உட்புற மாவட்டங்களான மயிலாடுதுறை, திருச்சி, பெரம்பலூர், அரியலூர் ஆகிய பகுதிகளில் **மிதமானது முதல் கனமழை** தொடங்குவதற்கு வாய்ப்புகள் இருக்கும்.
* பாண்டிச்சேரி, செங்கல்பட்டு, விழுப்புரம் ஆகிய இடங்களில் **நாளை நள்ளிரவு முதல்** மழை தொடங்குவதற்கு வாய்ப்பு.
### வட தமிழகம் மற்றும் சென்னை (நவம்பர் 29/30)
* **சென்னை பொறுத்தவரை 29 ஆம் தேதி விடியற்காலையில்** மழை தொடங்கும்.
* சலனம் 29 ஆம் தேதி டெல்டாவுக்கும் பாண்டிச்சேரிக்கும் இடைப்பட்ட பகுதிகளில் வரும்பொழுது, தென் மாவட்டங்களில் மழை குறைந்து, **டெல்டா மற்றும் வட மாவட்டங்களிலும்** அதை ஒட்டிய உட்புற மாவட்டங்களிலும் (கிருஷ்ணகிரி, தர்மபுரி, சேலம்) மழைக்கான வாய்ப்பு இருக்கும்.
* திருவள்ளூர், காஞ்சிபுரம், செங்கல்பட்டு, ராணிப்பேட்டை, வேலூர், திருவண்ணாமலை, விழுப்புரம், கள்ளக்குறிச்சி, கிருஷ்ணகிரி, தர்மபுரி, சேலம் ஆகிய பகுதிகள் எல்லாமே **29 ஆம் தேதியிலிருந்து** மழை தொடங்குவதற்கு வாய்ப்புகள் இருக்கும்.
### தெற்கு ஆந்திராவுக்கும் கனமழை எச்சரிக்கை
* **29 ஆம் தேதி பிற்பகல்** தெற்கு ஆந்திர பகுதிகளில் மழை தொடங்கும்.
* சுழற்சியின் வடக்கு/வடமேற்கு பகுதிகளில் கன்வர்ஜென்ஸ் அதிகமாக இருக்கும் என்பதால், 29 மற்றும் 30 முதல் டிசம்பர் 4 ம் தேதி ஆகிய தேதிகளில் தெற்கு ஆந்திர பகுதிகள் மற்றும் ராயல்சீமா பகுதிகளில் **கனம் முதல் மிக கனமழை** வரையிலும் கூட பதிவாக வாய்ப்பு இருக்கு.
