Weather Watch: Deep Depression Brings Historic Rainfall to Chennai; Landfall Expected Soon

The recent deep depression (ஆழ்ந்த தாழ்வுமண்டலம்), which some may call a severe deep depression (தீவிர ஆழ்ந்த தாழ்வுமண்டலம்), has delivered a major spell of heavy rain (கனமொழை) to Chennai. It has been referred to as a cyclonic system (புயல்) that did not disappoint (ஏமாற்றத்தை கொடுக்காத ஒரு டிட்வா புயல்).

The Stalling Scenario and Expected Landfall
The deep depression, which caused intense rain across Chennai, had been predicted to engage in a "stalling scenario," remaining stationary for 36 to 48 hours.
Currently, the system is situated 50 to 55 km southeast of Chennai, having moved slightly lower. Opportunities are high for this system to approach the coast and cross the area between Southern Chennai (தென்சென்னை பகுதிகளுக்கும்) and Pondicherry (பாண்டிச்சேரிக்கும்) later today, specifically after the afternoon or evening.
Why Was the Rain So Intense? The Meteorological Lock-In
The cyclone system, which initially moved away from the regions of Sri Lanka, reached the Tamil Nadu coast near Chennai and stopped.
This stationary behavior and the resulting heavy rainfall were due to a complex lock-in involving two major systems:
- The Indo-Pacific Ridge (IPR - இந்திய மீன் இந்தோ பசிபிக் உயரழுத்தம்): This high-pressure system stretches from the Andaman region.
- The Western Disturbance (வெஸ்டர்ன் டிஸ்டர்பன்ஸ் or மேற்கத்திய கழக்கம்): This system had been active for the past two days.
Initially, the interaction (ஊராய்வு) between the Western Disturbance and the system caused the rain clouds coming near Chennai to shear and pass over, preventing the expected rainfall. However, yesterday, the IPR Ridge and the Western Disturbance tightly locked the system. This lock-in caused rotation (சுழற்சி), generating heavy rain clouds that lashed coastal Chennai and parts of Andhra Pradesh.
The scenario is changing today: The Indo-Pacific Ridge is expected to start moving eastward (கிழக்கு நோக்கி நகர ஆரம்பிக்கும்) after the afternoon,Meanwhile the Deep Depression will Weaken in to Depression as it will start landfall process close to South Chennai Latitude. which will release the system from its grip, allowing it to attempt landfall. However, the friction (உராய்வு) caused by the Western Disturbance (mid-level trough) will continue to generate rain clouds today.
Rainfall Records: Chennai Sees Over 240 mm
Over the past 24 hours, heavy rain has been recorded across many parts of Chennai and its suburbs. The rainfall amounts recorded up until 5:30 AM this morning include:

Several other regions also recorded significant rainfall above 150 mm, including Basin Bridge (185 mm), Sathangadu (178 mm), Manali Pudhu Nagar (178 mm), Medavakkam Junction (174 mm), and Vadapalani (174 mm).
Forecast: Widespread Rains Continue Today
The rotation (சுழற்ச்சி) associated with the system continues to drive rainfall across multiple states today:
Tamil Nadu:
- Widespread rain is expected today.
- Heavy rain (கனமழை) and very heavy rain (பலத்த மழை) are possible in Chennai, North Chennai, and Thiruvallur districts.
- Moderate to heavy rain is expected in Southern Chennai suburbs, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Chengalpattu, and Villupuram districts.
- Interior districts like Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Puducherry, Cuddalore, and Kallakurichi may see moderate to heavy rain.
- Rain is also forecast across the Delta and Southern districts, including Thanjavur, Madurai, Sivaganga, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari.
- Western districts (Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Nilgiris) are expected to see light to moderate rain today, with heavy rain expected to commence from tomorrow.
Andhra Pradesh:
- Strong rain (பலத்த மழை) is highly likely in areas bordering Chennai, including Tirupati district, Sullurpet, Naidupeta, Sriharikota, Nellore, and Kavali.
- Very heavy rain (மிக பலத்த மழை) is possible in Guntur, Bapatla, and the inland regions of Prakasham district due to the spin of the system.
- Heavy rain is also expected widely in Nandyal, YSR Kadapa, Annamaiya, and Chittoor districts.
Other Regions (Kerala & Karnataka):
- Kerala is likely to experience moderate to heavy rain in districts like Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, and Thrissur.
- Karnataka districts like KGF, Kolar, Bengaluru, and Ramnagara are expected to see moderate to heavy rain.
Long-Term Outlook
The current spell of rain related to the circulation is anticipated to continue across Tamil Nadu for the next seven days. We will continue to track where and how the heavy rain progresses in the coming days.

இந்த சலனம் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட இடத்தில் நிலைத்ததற்கு முக்கிய காரணம் இரண்டு அமைப்புகளின் ஊராய்வு (interaction) மற்றும் இறுக்கமான லாக்-இன் ஆகும்:
1. **இந்தோ பசிபிக் உயரழுத்தம் (IPR):** இந்த அமைப்பு மியன்மார் பகுதிகளிலிருந்து அந்தமான் பகுதிகளிலிருந்து நீண்டு காணப்படுகிறது.

மேற்கு மாவட்டங்களான ஈரோடு, திருப்பூர், கோவை மற்றும் நீலகிரி மாவட்டங்கள்ல் லேசானது முதல் மிதமான மழைக்கான வாய்ப்புகள் இருக்கிறது. **இந்த மேற்கு மாவட்டங்களுக்கு நாளை முதல் பரவலாக கனமழை தொடங்குவதற்கு வாய்ப்புகள் இருக்கும்**.
#### ஆந்திர பிரதேசம்:
