Weather Update: Northeast Monsoon Holds Steady, Dry Air Approaching North Tamil Nadu

Good morning from Rainman Studio! Here is a look at the current weather developments as of today, December 5, 2025.

The immediate weather system is changing: the remnant of the 'Thiva' cyclone, which moved into the Arabian Sea, has now fully dissipated. Currently, moist easterly winds are traversing through Tamil Nadu.

Short-Term Outlook: Rain Recedes in the North

While parts of South Chennai experienced heavy rainfall early this morning, the general impact of the rain is expected to decrease gradually in Chennai starting today.

Across North Tamil Nadu, the rain will progressively diminish, and by this evening, most areas will see a reduction in rainfall. Starting tomorrow, particularly after the afternoon/evening, the influence of dry air is forecast to begin spreading across both North and South Tamil Nadu.

In the immediate 24-hour forecast for Tamil Nadu, moderate to heavy rain is likely across many southern and interior districts, including Tiruvannamalai, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Madurai, Salem, and Coimbatore. Meanwhile, districts such as Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Vellore, and Puducherry are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall.

Northeast Monsoon: A Strong Overall Performance

The data collected from October 1st up to December 4th shows a positive performance for the Northeast Monsoon. The normal expected rainfall for this period is 372.7 mm. However, the actual registered rainfall stands at 410.5 mm, indicating that the region has received 10% above the normal rainfall. This suggests that the monsoon is likely to conclude near its normal levels after a few more rain events.

District-wise performance, however, shows wide variance:

• Significant Surplus: Tirunelveli district has received the highest excess, registering 118% above normal. Other districts recording significant surpluses include Virudhunagar (37% excess), Vellore (31% excess), and Thoothukudi (23% excess). Chennai is currently standing at 1% above normal.
• Recent Heavy Falls: In the last 24 hours, Perumbakkam (Chengalpattu district) recorded 100 mm of rain, and Okkiyam Thuraipakkam registered 69.20 mm. These recent falls may help districts currently in deficit.
• Deficit Areas: Chengalpattu currently registers the largest deficit at -27%. Other areas with noticeable deficits include Perambalur (-21%), Tiruppur (-21%), and Karur (-19%).

Mid-Term Outlook: A December Break and Return

Following the arrival of dry air, a significant break in rainfall is anticipated, especially in North Tamil Nadu.

After a 1-2 day gap, a new episode of rain is expected. A fresh wave of easterly winds is anticipated around the 7th, 8th, or 9th of December, potentially bringing two or three days of rain to the Delta region and South Tamil Nadu. Following this, a long break is projected.

Looking further ahead into the long-term forecast (up to December 15th-20th), another spell of rain, associated with an upper-air circulation or easterly wind, is possible around the 17th, 18th, and 19th of December.

Regional Forecast: Kerala and Karnataka

Due to the persistent easterly winds, neighboring states are also expecting significant weather.

• Kerala: Widespread moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorm activity are expected. Districts like Ernakulam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, and Thiruvananthapuram are forecast to receive heavy rain.
• Karnataka: Moderate to heavy rain is expected in Mandya, Hassan, Mysuru, and Dakshina Kannada. Bengaluru and surrounding areas, however, are likely to see only light rain.

### இன்றைய வானிலை நிலவரம்

வடதமிழகத்தில் பெரும்பாலான பகுதிகளில் இன்று மாலை முதல் மழை குறைந்திரும். நாளை (டிசம்பர் 6) பிற்பகல் முதல், இந்த **வறண்ட காற்றினுடைய தாக்கம் தென் தமிழகத்திலும் வடதமிழகத்திலும் பரவ ஆரம்பித்துவிடும்**.

### அடுத்த 24 மணி நேரத்திற்கான மழை வாய்ப்பு

வறண்ட காற்றினுடைய தாக்கம் ஆரம்பித்த பின் 1 அல்லது 2 நாட்கள் மழை இடைவெளி இருக்கும்.

கிழக்கு திசை காற்றின் காரணமாக, கேரளப் பகுதிகளில் பரவலாக மிதமானது முதல் கனமழை மற்றும் இடியுடன் கூடிய மழை எதிர்பார்க்கப்படுகிறது. அதேபோல், கர்நாடகாவில் மாண்டியா, அசன், மைசூர், தட்சிண கன்னடா உள்ளிட்ட மாவட்டங்களில் மிதமானது முதல் கனமழையும், பெங்களூரு மற்றும் அதை சுற்றியுள்ள பகுதிகளில் லேசான மழையும் பதிவாவதற்கு சாத்தியக்கூறுகள் இருக்கக்கூடும்.
