Return of Dry Weather Looms: Rain Expected in South Tamil Nadu Today

Good morning and welcome back to Rainman Studio! This is the personal weather analysis by Venkatesh M.A. Rainman for today, December 17, 2025. Please follow the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and official government announcements for official weather forecasts and information.
Dry Air Impact in North Tamil Nadu
The high pressure (உயரெழுத்தம்) prevailing in the central Indian regions, particularly in areas bordering Rajasthan in the northern states, is causing dry air winds (ட்ரை ஏர் வின்ஸ்) to blow. These dry air winds have almost started blowing across North Tamil Nadu. As a result, the impact of the rainfall that typically arrives via the easterly winds (கிழக்கு திசை காற்று) will gradually decrease in North Tamil Nadu. The influence of this dry air will lead to less rainfall.
South Tamil Nadu Rainfall Expectation Today
The dry air mass is expected to start penetrating the Delta region and most parts of South Tamil Nadu only after this evening and night. Until that time, due to the humid air (ஈரப்பக காற்றின்), rain is likely to prevail in Karaikal, the Delta, and the majority of South Tamil Nadu. There is a possibility of reduced rainfall in North Tamil Nadu.
Next 24 Hours: Moderate to Heavy Rain Likely
Over the next 24 hours, we can expect moderate to heavy rain in certain parts of Tamil Nadu.
Areas Expected to Receive Moderate to Heavy Rain:
- Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Tenkasi, and most parts of Theni district, along with the western parts of Virudhunagar.
- We can specifically expect heavy rainfall today in the Manjolai Ghats area (mountain ranges).
Areas Expected to Receive Light Rain/Cloud Cover:
- Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipettai, Thiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Puducherry, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagai, Karaikal, Thiruvarur, Ariyalur, Thanjai, Perambalur, Salem, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Karur, Pudukottai, Sivagangai, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Dindigul, Tiruppur, and Coimbatore districts may experience cloud cover with a chance of only light rain in a few places.
Kerala Weather Summary
In Kerala, moderate rain is expected only in areas bordering the Western Ghats, such as Sabarimala and the western parts of Thiruvananthapuram. Light rain is possible in the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad. The remaining districts are likely to continue experiencing dry weather.
The Onset of the Dry Spell
Rainfall activity in Tamil Nadu is expected to decrease gradually starting tomorrow (December 18). A dry weather phase will begin across Tamil Nadu after tomorrow afternoon. The probability of rain will remain low until December 27.
We can anticipate the next round of rain around December 28 and 29. It is important to know that the Northeast Monsoon statistically concludes this month.
Rainfall Recorded in the Last 24 Hours
Good rainfall was recorded in the Cuddalore district over the last 24 hours.
- Kayalpatt recorded 74 millimeters (mm) of rain.
- Theerthagiri in Cuddalore recorded 56 mm of rain.
Other significant rainfall recordings included Velankanni in Nagapattinam district (38 mm), Uthandi in Chennai (36 mm), Thirumailadi in Mayiladuthurai (35.3 mm), Chithirakottai in Ramanathapuram (34.8 mm), Dindigul (Karakadavu) (33.2 mm), and Valasaravakkam in Chennai (31.2 mm). While this rain offers some relief, the overall weather system indicates the return of the dry weather pattern.

**தென் தமிழகத்தில் இன்று மழை எதிர்பார்ப்பு**
இன்று மாலை மற்றும் இரவுக்குப் பிறகாக இந்த வரண்ட காற்றானது டெல்டா மற்றும் தென் தமிழகத்தின் பெரும்பாலான பகுதிகளுக்குள் ஊடுருவ ஆரம்பிக்கும். அதுவரையிலும், ஈரப்பக காற்றின் காரணமாக, இன்று காரைக்கால், டெல்டா மற்றும் தென் தமிழகத்தின் பெரும்பாலான பகுதிகளில் மழை நிலவக்கூடும்.

* **லேசான மழை/மேகமூட்டம் வாய்ப்புள்ள பகுதிகள்:** சென்னை, திருவள்ளூர், காஞ்சிபுரம், செங்கல்பேட்டு, இராணிப்பேட்டை, திருவண்ணாமலை, விழுப்புரம், பாண்டிச்சேரி, கள்ளக்குறிச்சி, கடலூர், மயிலாடுதுறை, நாகை, காரைக்கால், திருவாரூர், அரியலூர், தஞ்சை, பெரம்பலூர், சேலம், நாமக்கல், திருச்சிரப்பள்ளி, கரூர், புதுக்கோட்டை, சிவகங்கை, மதுரை, விருதுநகர், திண்டுக்கல், திருப்பூர் மற்றும் கோயம்புத்தூர் ஆகிய மாவட்டங்களில் மேகமூட்டத்துடன் ஒரு சில பகுதிகளில் லேசான மழைக்கு மட்டும் வாய்ப்பு இருக்கும்.
**வறண்ட வானிலையின் தொடக்கம்**
நாளை (டிசம்பர் 18) முதல் தமிழகத்தில் மழை தாக்கம் படிப்படியாகக் குறையத் தொடங்கும். நாளை பிற்பகலுக்குப் பிறகாகத் தமிழகத்தில் ஒரு வறண்ட வானிலை நிலவ ஆரம்பிக்கும். அடுத்த 27ஆம் தேதி வரையிலும் மழைக்கான வாய்ப்புகள் குறைவாகவே இருக்கும்.
வரும் 28 மற்றும் 29 ஆம் தேதிகளில் அடுத்த சுற்று மழையை நாம் எதிர்பார்க்கலாம். வடகிழக்கு பருவமழை இந்த மாதத்துடன் புள்ளிவிவரப்படி முடிவடைகிறது என்பதையும் நாம் அறிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும்.
**கடந்த 24 மணி நேர மழைப் பதிவுகள்**
கடந்த 24 மணி நேரத்தில் கடலூர் மாவட்டத்தில் நல்ல மழை பதிவாகியுள்ளது. காயல்பட்டில் 74 மில்லிமீட்டர் மழையும், கடலூரில் தீர்த்தகிரியில் 56 மில்லிமீட்டர் மழையும் பதிவாகி இருக்கிறது. மேலும், நாகை மாவட்டத்தில் வேளாங்கண்ணி (38 மி.மீ), சென்னை உத்தண்டி (36 மி.மீ), மயிலாடுதுறை திருமயிலாடி (35.3 மி.மீ), இராமநாதபுரம் சித்திரக்கோட்டை (34.8 மி.மீ) மற்றும் சென்னை வளசரவாக்கம் (31.2 மி.மீ) போன்ற பகுதிகளில் மழை பதிவாகி இருக்கிறது. இந்த மழை ஒரு சிறிய ஆறுதல் அளித்தாலும், மீண்டும் வறண்ட வானிலை தொடர்கிறது என்பதுதான் இன்றைய வானிலை அமைப்பாகும்.
