Currently, an atmospheric upper-air circulation (வளிமண்டல மேலெடுக்கு சுழற்சி) continues to persist over the Central Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to move southward, near Sri Lanka, and subsequently weaken.
A key factor influencing today’s forecast is the weak status of the Northeast Monsoon winds (வடகிழக்கு காற்று) in coastal districts. However, there is a positive development: wind convergence (காற்று குவிதல்) is high in the southern parts of Tamil Nadu (தென்தமிழகம்). This convergence is the main driver behind the rain potential in the region. Overall, the current structure suggests a "retrieval phase".
Recent Rainfall Highlights
Rainfall recorded over the past 24 hours was generally isolated and not widespread. Light to moderate rain was registered until approximately 4:00 AM or 5:30 AM in areas including the vicinity of Trichy, some parts of Ramanathapuram, and Cuddalore.
The heaviest rainfall recorded was 40.4 mm in Mandapam (Ramanathapuram district). Other significant recordings include:
- Keelathural (Ramanathapuram): 24 mm
- Muninjipatti (Tirunelveli): 19.6 mm
- Melakudumalur (Ramanathapuram): 15.2 mm
- Sitharpanaaloor (Tirunelveli): 10.8 mm
- Pullandai (Ramanathapuram): 10 mm
- Manjakam (North Chennai): 6.8 mm
- Tuticorin also reported light rain in some areas.
The 24-Hour Forecast: South Tamil Nadu Potential
Due to the wind convergence, South Tamil Nadu holds the highest potential for rain today. Light or moderate rain is anticipated in isolated areas across numerous districts.
Districts with rain expectations include:
- South TN: Nagercoil, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Tuticorin, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Dindigul, Madurai, and Theni.
- Heavy Rain Alert: There is a possibility of isolated heavy rain in specific areas within Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Tuticudi districts. Heavy rain is also possible in some parts of the hilly areas of Kanyakumari.
- Central/Coastal TN: Light or moderate rain may also occur in isolated spots across Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Chengalpattu, and the Nilgiris district.
Limited Rain Potential: Many highly populated areas face lower chances of significant rainfall. Large-scale rain is not expected in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, Pondicherry, Cuddalore, Salem, Erode, Tiruppur, and Coimbatore. Furthermore, dry weather conditions are likely to prevail in Tirupattur and Krishnagiri districts.
Neighboring States and Long-Term Outlook
Kerala is forecasted to receive light to moderate rain, with isolated heavy rain possible in districts like Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, and Thrissur, and parts of Malappuram and Palakkad. Light rain is expected in Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.
In Andhra Pradesh, areas such as Bapatla, Prakasam, Nellore, Kavali, Tirupati, and Chittoor may experience cloud cover and isolated light rain.
Looking ahead to the next week, the weather models suggest a very low probability for the formation of a cyclone, low-pressure area, or depression. While the region has seen the impact of the Kelvin wave, that effect is weakening. Models show the MJO (Madden–Julian Oscillation) continuing in phase 6&7.Need to watch in Realtime updates to confirm the behavior of the Tropical Wave Movement further. The overall forecast suggests that November rainfall may not be "excessive," and reaching the normal expected average would be a significant outcome.
