Here is a detailed look at the current weather analysis and what you can expect today, November 18, 2025.
The Current System: LPA Between Sri Lanka and Kanyakumari
The driving force behind the current rainfall is a low-pressure area (LPA). Yesterday, this system was situated southeast of Sri Lanka, but it has since traveled through Sri Lanka.
The LPA is currently positioned between Sri Lanka and the Kanyakumari sea areas. This system features an upper-air circulation extending high up, between 7.8 and 8 kilometers.
Due to this system, easterly winds are sweeping across the Tamil Nadu coastal regions. These moisture-laden easterly winds, combined with the upper-air circulation and the LPA, create convergence, which intensifies rainfall.
Yesterday's Rainfall Records (The Delta Takes Center Stage)
The convergence caused significant rainfall yesterday, particularly in the Nagai district. Looking at the past 24 hours, the Nagapattinam district was defined as the total rainfall pattern focus.
Key Rainfall Recordings (Past 24 Hours):
- Thopputhurai, Nagapattinam: 18 cm.
- Pachantikulam: 13.3 cm.
- Kodiakkarai: 11.8 cm.
- Nagapattinam Town recorded 93.6 mm, while Peralam (Thiruvarur) received 95.2 mm.
- The Delta districts in general, including Thanjavur (such as Maruthuvakudi at 52.8 mm), received good rainfall.
Today's Forecast: Alert for South Tamil Nadu
Since the low-pressure area is expected to travel through the Kanyakumari sea area today, South Tamil Nadu needs to be alert.
Heavy to Very Heavy Rain Warnings:
- Widespread heavy rain is expected in the southern districts, including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Theni, and Tenkasi.
- Coastal parts of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari may see heavy to very heavy rain.
- The Ghats area and regions adjacent to the Western Ghats are also under a heavy rain possibility.
- Ramanathapuram and Nilgiri districts are also likely to experience widespread heavy rain today.
Coastal and Northern Districts:
- Widespread heavy to strong rain is possible in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Villupuram, Pondicherry, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Karaikal, and Nagai districts.
- Chennai Outlook: Light to moderate rain is expected during the daytime. There is a possibility of heavy rain in the evening or night. The trough line has moved, and cloud clusters are now forming and moving easily from the sea towards the land.
Inner Districts:
- Most inner districts, including Vellore, Tirupattur, Thiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Kallakurichi, Salem (West), Erode, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, and Madurai, are expected to receive widespread moderate rain, with the chance of heavy rain in isolated areas. For those who have not yet received any rain, the sources suggest that the upcoming two or three days will definitely bring relief.
Neighboring State Outlook
The easterly winds are also penetrating inward, bringing rain to neighboring states:
- Kerala: Widespread heavy rain is expected across all districts. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Wayanad (East/Southeast), Malappuram (West), Nilambur, and areas bordering the Western Ghats.
- Karnataka: Convective rains are expected. Moderate to heavy rain is likely in Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Bangalore, Ramnagar, Mandya, Hassan, Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Tumakuru, and Chitradurga districts.
- Andhra Pradesh: Continued heavy rain is forecast for Nellore, Kavali, and Tirupati districts. Moderate to heavy rain is also expected in Kadapa, Annamayya, Chittoor, Anantapur, and Satya Sai districts.
