Heavy Rain Continues: Weather Update for October 19, 2025
Good morning! Heavy rainfall is continuing today, October 19, 2025, across South India. This is an update based on our personal weather analysis. (Please note: Always adhere to official government advisories and updates from the Indian Meteorological Department for authoritative forecasts).
Current Systems Driving the Rain
The current spell of widespread moisture and intense rain is being influenced by several systems:
- Low-Pressure Area: The system that formed over the Comorin Sea and moved toward the Lakshadweep Islands has become a Well-Marked Low Pressure (வெல்மார்ட் லோ பிரஷர்) and has shifted further west.
- Upper Air Cyclonic Circulations (UACC): There are two significant circulations: a weak UACC over the Gulf of Mannar, and another UACC located southeast of Sri Lanka.
- Trough Line: These systems are aligned along a specific latitude, forming the Trough Line (ட்ராப்லைன்) or area of thermal convergence (வெப்ப குவிதல் பகுதி).
- The Forecast for the Next 24 Hours: The weak UACC near the Gulf of Mannar is expected to transfer its full power to the circulation located southeast of Sri Lanka over the next 24 hours. This strengthened circulation is then anticipated to move westward toward North Tamil Nadu.
- Moisture Influx: Easterly winds coming from the South China Sea, drawing in moist air (ஈரமேக காகற்ற) over the Bay of Bengal, and the presence of the Well-Marked Low Pressure in the Arabian Sea are collectively pulling moisture across Tamil Nadu, resulting in significant rainfall in most interior regions. Coastal areas like Ramnad, Sivaganga, Nellai, Virudhunagar, and Kanyakumari currently show dense cloud cover.
Rainfall Report (Last 24 Hours)
The last 24 hours have seen intense rain, particularly in the western and southern districts. The highest recorded rainfall amounts include:
- Kothagiri, Nilgiris: 148 mm
- Koda Nadu, Nilgiris: 139 mm
- Nalaikkkai, Ramanathapuram: 126 mm
- Sevur, Tiruppur: 117 mm
- Konava Korai, Nilgiris: 110 mm
Significant downpours were also recorded in Coimbatore and Ramanathapuram districts. Because of the intense weather systems, areas bordering the Western Ghats are advised to remain alert (விழிப்புணர்வுடன் இருக்க வேண்டிய அமைப்பு). The heavy rains have unfortunately led to conditions where flooding is possible in several areas.
