Heavy Rain Alert: Low-Pressure Area Strengthens Over Lakshadweep – Latest Weather Analysis (Oct 18, 2025)
Good morning and welcome back to Rainman Studio! This analysis represents our individual weather assessment. For official weather announcements and forecasts, please follow the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and government-related announcements.
Current Weather System Development
The weather patterns currently affecting South India are linked to a significant system that has been evolving over the last few days. The atmospheric upper-level circulation, which was previously situated near the Kanyakumari Sea, moved yesterday to near the Lakshadweep islands. This circulation has since moved slightly westward and has strengthened into a low-pressure area.
In addition to this, there is a separate disturbance, described as an environment conducive to the formation of an atmospheric upper-level circulation, located in the Indonesia and Banda Islands regions. A trough (Trough structure) persists between these two systems, extending specifically up to Sri Lanka. Due to these systems, many areas in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu and the eastern coastal regions, including Cuddalore, have prospects for heavy rainfall today.
Significant Rainfall Recorded in the Last 24 Hours
The previous circulation brought heavy rainfall to several areas, with very heavy rain reported in some parts of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, and Virudhunagar districts.
The quantity of rainfall recorded over the last 24 hours shows high intensity in the southern regions:
- Virudhunagar (Sundararajapuram): 27.7 cm (277 mm).
- Theni (Melakoodalur): 18.2 cm (182 mm).
- Virudhunagar (Ayanakollankondan): 142 mm.
- Kanyakumari (Serukodu): 122.8 mm.
- Tirunelveli (Mahendragiri): 118 mm.
- Widespread heavy rain was reported across the southern districts, including Nilgiris, Virudhunagar, Nellai, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari.

Other interior districts may experience dry weather.
Andhra Pradesh & Telangana
In Andhra Pradesh, the interaction between dry air in the upper layer and moisture-rich air in the lower layer creates conditions favorable for rain. Heavy rain is probable along coastal regions like Vijayanagaram, Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, and Nellore. Interior districts such as Kadapa, Tirupati, and Anantapur are expected to receive moderate to heavy rain.
In Telangana, generally dry weather is expected, including in Hyderabad. However, light rain is possible in areas like Kothagudem and Khammam.
