- Low-Level Easterly Winds: Moist winds from the Bay of Bengal are moving towards the Tamil Nadu coast at the 850 HPA (approx. 1,500 feet) level.
- Strong Western Disturbance: Simultaneously, at the 500 HPA (mid-level troposphere), a powerful Western Disturbance is stretching from Central India down toward the South.
When these two systems meet, they create what is known as a "Central Interaction Zone". The friction between the moisture-rich easterly air and the instability of the mid-level western disturbance causes "mid-level lift," forcing the air upward and creating rain clouds. Because these systems interact vertically, the exact location and intensity of the rain can vary based on the specific angle where they meet in real-time.
What to Expect: Regional Forecast
While different weather models like the GFS and ECMWF have shown some inconsistencies, current trends suggest a widespread rain episode.
- Delta & South Tamil Nadu: Areas including Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Tuticorin are showing strong signals for moderate to heavy rain.
- Chennai & Surrounding Districts: Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram are expected to see light to moderate rain.
- Interior Districts: Madurai, Trichy, Salem, and Erode are likely to experience moderate rainfall, while the Coimbatore and Kongu regions may see light to moderate showers.
